Dyslexia Assessments

For children from Grade 3 and up. Clear answers, a detailed report and a plan tailored to your child, so reading and spelling can finally start to make sense.

What is dyslexia?

Dyslexia is a lifelong, often inherited learning difference that affects how the brain processes written and spoken language. At its heart is difficulty linking letters to their sounds, which makes reading, spelling and writing much harder work than it should be.

Dyslexia has nothing to do with intelligence, laziness or poor teaching. Children with dyslexia are bright and capable. Their brains simply process language differently, and with the right understanding and support, they can thrive.

Signs to look out for

Signs you may have noticed earlier

  • Difficulty learning letter names and sounds
  • Trouble with rhyming or breaking words into sounds
  • Struggling to remember sequences, such as days of the week
  • A family history of reading or spelling difficulties

From Grade 3 and up

  • Slow, effortful or inaccurate reading
  • Spelling the same word differently each time
  • Reading comprehension affected by the effort of decoding
  • Avoiding reading aloud, or growing frustration and low confidence with schoolwork

Is your child younger than Grade 3? If you’re noticing early signs, there’s no need to wait. Our speech therapy and literacy support can help build strong sound and language foundations now, and we can assess for dyslexia once your child reaches Grade 3.

Our assessment

Megan is a registered practitioner with the Stark Griffin™ Dyslexia Academy (SGDA), and assesses children from Grade 3 and up using their structured, research-based assessment, which is endorsed by the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA).

1. Parent questionnaire

You’ll share your child’s developmental, school and family history, so we understand the full picture.

2. Screening test

A screening assessment that looks for indicators of dyslexia risk.

3. Diagnostic assessment

A detailed assessment that confirms whether dyslexia is present, and identifies its type and severity.

What we look at

  • How your child reads words by sight and by sounding them out
  • How they hear and work with the sounds in words
  • Spelling patterns and how they apply spelling rules
  • Letter and number formation, and any reversals

What you receive

  • A clear, detailed diagnostic report
  • Your child’s dyslexia type, if present, explained in plain language
  • A tailored intervention plan based on their strengths and needs
  • Practical recommendations for home and school

Why assess with us?

Reading difficulties don’t always come from dyslexia alone. Because Megan is both an audiologist and a speech-language therapist, we can also check your child’s hearing, auditory processing and language skills, making sure nothing else is being overlooked. And where support is needed, our literacy therapy can help your child build the skills they need.

Fees and medical aid

Accounts are settled at the time of your visit, and we’ll give you a detailed statement so you can claim back from your medical aid. Private patients are very welcome. Cover varies from plan to plan, so it’s worth checking your benefits with your scheme.
